Game 8 vs. Red Sox (A) - 5/22/10...W 4-3
A great comeback game after dropping four straight...the Dandy "D's" brought home a victory in a close contest that featured more great pitching by our big gun...Count (those strikeouts) Montefusco...a great ball game that was a 1-0 duel with Red Sox dealer Alec Norton...before both teams traded three runs a peice in the sixth...great defense and an overall good team effort for the D-men!
Game 7 vs. Mets (A) - 5/18/10...L 7-2
After surrending six runs in the first inning in a sloppy start...the dandy dodgers couldn't recover against the mighty Mets lineup...our lads fought hard...but Ryan Mac had too much attack! The highlight for the Dodgers was seeing their ace Master Monty pitching three shut-out frames...and witnessing more of the speedty step of Loring Lauretti...that boy can run!
Game 6 vs. Rangers (B) - 5/15/10...L 15-7
There are times in sport...especially our beloved game of baseball that it's not all about the score...it's about the results! And, folks...the results of this game reflect some very positive signs for the LA County Clan. This game resulted in more "value" than what will appear on the standings sheet, as we were treated to quality at-bats against one of the league's finest hurlers...one Michael Cohen. Getting a hit against Michael Cohen has value...seeing pitches from him has value...competing for six innings with Mike on the mound indeed has value. After letting the first inning get away from us with a seven run deficit...the boys in Dodger Blue battled to the end and improved with every at-bat...a good sign in this young season...plenty of ball in front of us...and plenty of room for success!
Game 5 vs. Rangers (A) - 5/13/10...L 11-8
In a featured match-up between two of the league's heavy-weights...Matt "the Count" Montefusco vs. JP "Zippadee Fast-ball" Adams...this bout would go down to the last half frame before a belt would be awarded. The Rangers in their furious form came out swinging to jump ahead with to a 7-1 lead by the end of round (inning) three...including NINE K's for JP to punch-out nearly everyone on the Dodger roster...except for one...the lone soldier...Count Money-ball himself who would not go down without a fight. And, as the 4th frame commenced, the Dodger lineup put the gloves on themselves and rallied with their leader to put themselves ahead 8-7 at the start of the 5th...only to leave enough room for the formidable Ranger lineup to plate another 4-spot to put the game away. Some call-outs to Bobby Driscoll for his continued strong plate appearances...going 2 for 3 with a double and heroic collision at home to attempt to rally the team in the 6th..."EA" Avotins with more great hitting with a double and run scored...and of course, the Count himself...Master Montefusco pitched a gem of a game and went 2 for 2 with a walk, triple, home-run and three runs scored! Kepp working boys...we're getting better every game.
Game 4 vs. Cardinals (A) - 5/8/10...L 10-0
Between dodging some rain-drops and hail stones during the pre-game warm-up...the Barnes Field grounds crew managed to prep the facility for a muddy start to what would become a slightly sloppy result. The Band of Brothers in Blue took the mat first and fought hard to keep those strong Cardinal sluggers in check...but to no avail. The legendary Cardinal lineup mowed their way to an 8-0 lead before the first frame was over. But the Blueshirts would never give up, and limited the Cards to only two more runs, including a nice solo-shot but Master Fein, for the remaining four innings. Great debut outing by the Cards rookie left-hander Sammy "Big Cat" Montgomery and the solid defense behind him. Keep working Blue...there's plenty more baseball to cover for this one!
Game 3 vs. Red Sox (B) - 5/4/10...W 9-1
The Blue Bombers brought some "carry-over" juice from their exciting one-run victory over the weekend to a showdown against the deep roster of the mighty Red Sox. However, the game did begin with an awkward start as the League's big man Jack Chamberlin went down on a hustle play to first base after sending one back on a rope to the forearm of hurler Joe Cav...we wish Jack a very speedy recovery and hope to see him on the field again soon!
After rubbing a little dirt on it...Cavo retired five of the next six batters to log 2-1/3 shut-out innings...a good start to a great finish! But tonight's story was all about the new kids on the Dodgers block...some new names with some big game! Let's start with the shot heard 'round the Common...yes indeed, we're talking the Big-trip (3-bagger) for Ethan "EA Sports" Avotins...and how about the freshman lead-off batter Charlie Pyne going 2 for 2 with a walk and run scored...Seen-your Bobby Driscoll going 2 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases AND runs scored...Wil 'the Wizard' with the "Room 222 Special"...2-walks, 2-steals, and 2-runs scored...Loring Lauretti flashing his speed with a stolen base and run scored...but wait...up in the sky...it's a bird...it's a plane...no it's Will "Bunyon" Thomas' ball sailing over Minot's Light...yow-za, yow-za, yow-za!
Will T. put on a clinic on how to pitch in a jam...how to turn a double play to save a run under the gun (with a little help from our own crafty Vet, Monty "Money Ball" behind the plate)...but most of all, how to go yaaahhd as a 10-yr old...and still run the bases and act like it wasn't the first time...and folks, we're here to say...it won't be his last! Nice job boys...let's keep it rollin'...
Game 2 vs. Mets (B) - 5/1/10...W 10-9
The fans were treated to a tradgey-suspense-thriller in this delightful drama between two ball clubs that don't mind getting their pants dirty! We begin with a gutsy start on the mound by our very own crafty right-hander Will "the Wizard" Gildea...tremendous opening display of pitching that included three K's in the first two frames along with some high level wizardry with his magic wand to lay down a bunt that will be posted on You-tube for instructional purposes...more on that later.
We knew going in that this Mets lineup is juiced from top to bottom..and we were reminded...run after run afer run...until we looked up a the bright lights of the Chase scoreboard to find ourselves down 8-1 after two innings. But never say never friends...as this Dodger Club has grit! Gritty pitching Joe Cav to shut down the Mets run production...gritty defense by Bobby Driscoll at first and behind the plate...including a run saved put-out at the plate!...gritty offense by Michael Connolly who put courage ahead of style to crash home to try to knot it up.
But in the end...you can't win a gun fight with a sling-shot...and when your playing a team as good as the Mets...you need to roll out the artillary and sharpen your pencils to get past this crew. Fortunately, we had a few bullets to spare with some timely hits, including a sweet two-bagger by Dylan "Spell-check" Piasecki...Ethan "EA Sports" Avotins...strategic placement by the Wizard...two jacks by the bazooka brothers Monty & Giddy-up...and finally the closing pitching that only Monty "Money Ball" can bring to the party...hats off boys...great win against a great team!
Game 1 vs. Pirates (B) - 4/27/10...Leading 2-1 (Top 4th)
The Blue Bombers opened the 2010 Season on a misty night on fabled Barnes Field against the vaunted Pirates in a rematch of the '09 Championship Series that shall 'be continued' due to rain delay. The "Big Rook" Charlie Pyne took the hill in his long awaited debut in which he shined in two innings only allowing one hit, one run, and logging three strikeouts...watch out for this highly touted prospect in future featured articles. Another rookie...namely one Harry Timothy soaked in the spotlight with a blast to the opposite field on his first pitch in the bigs against the Championship closer...great stuff! However, the rooks were'nt the only ones ready to play...our two sophomores brought put us on top with some neat pitching and a strong double by Joe Cav...along with the first of what fans expect to be many more long balls by our franchise-boy...Owen "giddy-up...and get home" Murphy! ...to be continued!
