Cohasset Williamsport Nine Ends Great Tourney Run
In a well played pitchers’ duel, Cohasset’s Williamsport all star team fell to Braintree National in the District semi-finals on July 14 by a score of 3-0. The loss ended an amazing post season run by the Cohasset Nine, as the Boys in Blue authored a terrific post-season.
Ben Rice was fantastic as Cohasset’s starter, as he pitched into the 6th, and only allowed two runs to the powerful Braintree National lineup.
Rice also had one of the few Cohasset hits off the fireballing Braintree aces, as he laced a liner off the right field fence in the 5th inning. Liam O’Connell picked up a double to left center in the second inning, and Michael Cohen singled to right in the 5th. Tim Chase drew hard earned walks in all three plate appearances to keep the pressure on the Braintree staff. But in the end, Braintree’s aces made the pitches when they had to, and deserve credit for an extremely well pitched game. Defensively, Cohasset was again strong, as Will Greer led the way with a terrific play on a hard hit grounder to nail a Braintree batter.
The Cohasset Williamsport All Stars gave their fans plenty to cheer about, and represented the town with class and distinction. Despite injuries to a few key players, the boys made a tremendous run at the District crown. Go Blue!
Cohasset Williamsport Team Moves to District 8 Semi-Final!!!
Extra innings. Bottom of seventh, two outs, runners on second and third. Norwell and Cohasset tied at 4. Joe Cavanaro strides to the plate…and delivers! A walk off single into left, and Cohasset’s Williamsport team continued its amazing run through the District 8 playoffs with a seven inning 5-4 win on Tuesday night! It was an instant classic, and a true team effort. A tremendous pitching performance by Owen Gideon-Murphy, as he shut down a Norwell attack that had plated 3 runs in the first for an early lead. Ben Rice, a huge grand slam home run in the second, as Cohasset jumps back on top by a 4-3 count. Stellar defense by Will Greer and Liam O’Connell in the infield, as each recorded four clutch put outs to extinguish Norwell rallies. Sam Montgomery with a big defensive play in the top of the 7th, snaring a hard liner at first. Tim Chase, Michael Cohen, Cole Joslin, and Tommy Carrabes with big at bats, drawing hard earned walks, and driving up pitch counts. What a win, what a team!
This win follows the team’s sweep of pool play. It began with a 8-1 win over Hingham American, keyed by the pitching of Gideon-Murphy and a home run by Michael Cohen and two run double by Ben Rice. Game two saw Cohasset beat Avon/Holbrook by a 12-4 count, with home runs from Owen Gideon-Murphy (2), Liam O’Connell and Ben Rice. In game three, Cohasset bested Abington by a 14-0 count behind a combined one-hitter by Gideon-Murphy and Tim Chase, and Michael Cohen’s dinger. Chase and Rice spun another gem in game four, as the duo combined on another one-hit shutout in Cohasset’s 8-0 win over rival Scituate. After pool play, Cohasset had earned a top seed with a 4-0 record, as it outscored its opponents by a 42-5 count!

Cohasset Williamsport Wins Pool, Advances to Final 8!
Cohasset’s Williamsport team beat rival Scituate Saturday in convincing fashion, as the Boys in Blue rode stellar pitching performances by Tim Chase and Ben Rice to best their neighbors by an 8-0 count. Chase and Rice kept the Scituate bats quiet all day, and combined on a one-hit gem, as Cohasset rolled to its fourth consecutive win and a top seed in the next single elimination round. In pool play, the Boys in Blue outscored their opponents by a 42-5 margin!
This win was a true team effort. Chase started for Cohasset, and was masterful, as he mixed his curve and heater to keep Scituate off balance. Cohasset jumped out early in the first, as Ben Rice and Michael Cohen drew walks with solid at bats, and after both advanced on a passed ball, Owen Gideon-Murphy plated one run with a sacrifice fly. Cohen, advancing to third on Gideon-Murphy’s fly, then scored on a wild pitch. That 2 run lead was all the Cohasset staff needed, as Chase threw shutout ball into the fourth. Rice relieved Chase, and was equally masterful in completing the one hit shutout.
Joe Cavanaro played a great game for Cohasset, making a nice catch in right and contributing with a RBI line drive into left in the 3rd. The infield of Gideon-Murphy, Will Greer, Liam O’Connell, Tim Chase and Sam Montgomery played flawlessly, with Greer snagging two grounders at third and making on the money throws to first, and Tim Chase making a tremendous catch of a foul pop in the final inning. Michael Cohen had two doubles off the fence to contribute to the offense, Liam O’Connell contributed a solid line drive into center, Owen Gideon-Murphy had a key two strike RBI single, Cole Joslin hustled down the line to get a base hit, and Tommy Carrabes contributed with two great at bats as the Cohasset nine forced the Scituate staff to throw 130 pitches over the 6 innings.
With a number one seed, Cohasset advances to a Tuesday night single elimination game at Braintree’s Hollingsworth Park. Game time is 6 pm. Go Blue!
Cohasset Cruises to Third Victory
July 5, 2011...Carlson Field – Hingham, MA
Cohasset’s 12-yr old Williamsport Team logged their third victory in as many games in the LL Williamsport District 8 Tournament in a decisive win against south shore rival Abington, 14-0 in five innings on Tuesday night. Led by dual aces Owen Gideon-Murphy (WP) and team-mate Timmy Chase...the dynamic duo shut-out a talented Abington lineup with a mix of speed and deception. Both hurlers dealt a deadly dose of bullets to keep the Abington bats silent with the exception of a single hit between the pair..
More offensive power was on display from the entire lineup that saw seven of ten players cross home plate...and seven of ten log hits against a series of Abington pitchers. Indeed, Mr. Michael Cohen...ala “Weekend at Bernies” made two plate appearances in exchange for four RBI’s, including a two-run home run and two-RBI double off the fence! Sam Montgomery had a stellar night at the plate that included an RBI single during his 2 for 3 bonanza...Cole Joslin and Liam O’Connell continued their plate production with five runs scored between the tandem...and Will Greer added a “quick but not rushed” clutch lead-out from short to squelch an Abington surge in the second. A great team victory from a gritty group of lads that continue to conquer a variety of adversities along their magical mystery tour of the District 8 Dance!
Please visit Carlson Field across from the South Shore Country Club on 7/9/11, Saturday morning at 10am to cheer on this band of warriors in their next bout v. border rival Scituate.

Cohasset Rolls On In Williamsport Tourney, with 12-4 Win!
On Saturday, Cohasset’s Williamsport tourney team traveled to Braintree to take on Avon/Holbrook in the second game of District 8 pool play. As in game one, Cohasset’s Boys in Blue came out firing. Sporting their snazzy new look uniforms, the Cohasset nine struck first, as they plated four runs in the top of the first. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, Cohasset broke the game open in the middle innings, as Cohasset’s hard hitting lineup wore down the Avon/Holbrook pitching.
Tim Chase started for Cohasset and picked up the win, as he pitched into the third inning and kept Avon/Holbrook at bay. Owen Gideon Murphy closed out the win, as his heater burned through the Avon/Holbrook lineup. Joe Cavanaro stepped in for Ben Rice as catcher for the last inning, and made two stellar plays to close out the win. Sam Montgomery played a strong game at first, and Will Greer ably manned the hot corner for the boys in blue. The combination of Alec Norton, Cole Joslin and Joe Cavanaro roamed the outfield grass with aplomb.
Offensive stars included Owen Gideon Murphy, who hit two home runs, the first of which was a mammoth shot to deep center. Ben Rice and Liam O’Connell also blasted home runs for Cohasset, and Tim Chase ripped two solid liners to help his own cause on the hill.
The Boys in Blue continue their Williamsport experience with a game against a tough Abington squad on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 – 6 pm start at Hingham’s new bare Cove Park fields. Directions are in link below:

Cohasset 12-yr old Williamsport Team Wins Opener, 8-1 over Hingham American
Cohasset’s 12 year-old Williamsport played host to the first game of their 2011 Tournament play at their own Barnes Field against a Hingham American (1-0) club that featured some stout young players that defeated their opening opponent by a score of 13-0. But, Cohasset brought their bats and ace pitcher to the delight of a capacity crowd at the North Main Street facility for a beautiful night of Little League baseball.
The boys in blue came out firing as the “visiting” team with solid at-bats throughout the lineup...loading the bases but unable to put any runs on the board until the third inning at the hands of Michael Cohen’s solo homerun. Starter Owen Gideon-Murphy pitched a gem of a game through four shutout innings with (8) strikeouts and zero walks! But, as is often the key to victory in what was a close contest at 1-0 mid-way through the game is how the entire lineup competes at the plate...and our boys came up big!
Liam O’Connell (1-3, BB, 2 runs scored), Will Greer (HR/3B, BB, 1 run scored), and Cole Joslin (2-3, BB, 2 runs scored) all contributed big with timely hits, long at-bats, and great base running to tally (5) of the eight runs of the game! In addition, Ben Rice (2-5, SAC, 3 RBI’s, 1 run scored) had a clutch double in the 4th to put his team ahead for good. Overall, the team compiled a .541 OBP with eight of nine players logging hits, and 20 players reaching base....all resulting in an 8-1 victory for the boys in blue, what a start!
The Boys play their next game at Hollingsworth Park in Braintree, MA at 10am Saturday 7/2/11 where they will face off against Avon/Holbrook (0-2)...please come and watch this gritty group of players represent Cohasset in this exciting Little League event!
